Our members are distinguished by their dedication to the country or countries they report on. By living in our places of work or focusing on long-term projects, we are able to develop intimate knowledge of and respect for the stories we tell.

Makoto is governed by the principle that images require explanation. Through the introduction and detailed captions that accompany each essay, we aim to show the context behind the pictures. Only then can the story be told.

We believe that the best photojournalism does not come from having the most expensive cameras and collecting the greatest number of stamps in our passports but rather from unfailing commitment to people, places, and causes. Long after everyone else has gone to the next war zone or chased the next headline, we will still be here watching and listening.
